As many of you have read on this little blog, that Dexter is a parrot of all things picky. He only likes certain kinds of food, music, perches, cages.... etc. Lets just safely say that he is his own personality. Well, Eric and I made his shower perch out of PVC pipe, and he likes it a 4 on a scale of 1-10. Well I placed an old crock from his old California cage that he would bathe in... well hell hath no fury like a parrot findind a watering hole.
He took to the water like a elephant finding a mirage to be true in the African heat. Splash Splash Splash! He would not stop until the entire thing was empty. It is moments like this that it does my heart good to find something that he really enjoys. Even though he doesn't make it easy. It just goes to show that a little patience and a little diligence, you can easily help in your journey in the world of the African Grey.

Dr Doolittle or Norman Rockwell
This morning, I was doing my usual ritual of letting Dexter sun on his "new" parrot stand, and reading, when I looked down and realized what was going on. There was a Golden Retriever at my right foot, a dwarf Maine Coon to my right, and across the room, a rather large black tabby cat. I then realized what a special place that animals play in our lives, and how empty they would be with out them. In a way it reminded me of a new version of a Normal Rockwell painting.

Mandrill Primates Do Not Disturb

A group of 23 Mandrill Mokeys will periodically cover their eyes. In such a way, that scientist believe it's a "do not disturb" sign flip. The Mandrills will cover their eyes for up to 30 minutes at a time. The scientist believe that this is a cultural behavior they have adapted to in captivity. Kind of asking for privacy, hmmm, guess you can teach an old monkey new tricks!

Full Spectrum Lighting... To Be or Not To Be?
There have been multiple opinions regarding full spectrum lighting. Heck, I even called a veterinarian that said it wouldn't be needed in Seattle, then read TONS of conflicting reports on a couple forums that I belong to. I have read various opinions in Domestic Bird Publications, and well... it turns out that there is good and bad in everything.
First, we as humans on this planet need Vitamin D, and guess what kids, so do other animals, including your parrots. The easiest way to get Vitamin D for a parrot is time in the sun daily. Now birds can have sun, but can also overheat just as easily, so shade is vitaly just as important. They need to be hydrated as well, so make sure they have access to fresh water, and you might be surprised when they take a bath in their water bowl... not the Dexter has ever done that.
Now if you live in climates that don't have the plethera of sunshine, like Seattle, they make Full Spectum bulbs that you can put in lamps, and in overhead lighting. You can also be sly and go to Ikea, and find a cheap stand up lamp that will shine into your birds cage. You do want to be careful at the angle and location of the lamp, because you want to make sure that your bird has the option of getting out of the lighting. A timer is a good idea too (too much full spectrum UVB lighting can send your feathered friend into a hormonal roller coaster). The veterinarian that I spoke to , said that too much lighting, and lighting at a direct angle can cause cataracts. This is where the double edged sword situation comes in.
Questions.... do you want your bird to be emotionally and physically healthy with being exposed to Vitamin D, which helps with mood(yep same as seasonal effective disorder SED in humans) and aids in calcium absorption? Or would you like to deal with hormones and possible cataracts at a later age. I suppose it would be a matter of taste, similar to Splenda vs. Sugar.

Well, after following Patricia Sund's Parrot Nation blog, I decided to take one of my days off and make her Beanie recipe.

It is a popular choice for vegans, as it helps them take in the adequate amount of proteins, a sometimes tricky thing if you are vegan. It is gluten-free and it a wonderful source of phosphorous, magnesium, zinc, copper and manganese. It contains vitamin B6, niacin and thiamine. It has lysine for building proteins in the body, also contains riboflavin, (vitamin B2) an extremely important vitamin for producing energy.

Barley is absolutely loaded with fiber. It provides insoluble fibers that help feed friendly bacteria in the digestive tract. This helps maintain larger populations of friendly bacteria. What this does is crowd out disease-causing bacteria and prevents them from surviving in the intestinal system. Barley is also a source of niacin, a B vitamin. 13 Bean Soup (organic)
Lentils, Barley and Quinoa from the organic section of our local supermarket.
the original recipe asks for shells, I didn't have any, so i cracked up some whole wheat thin spaghetti into small portion, and added it.
I added an Anaheim pepper, for some spice.
Quinoa and carrots.
I have to tell you I havent ever made a meal this nutritious for myself, let alone any pet. It's extremely rewarding.
I did send Patricia a message on facebook, asking for a little hint about how much to feed (2 tbs per day along with pellets, etc.) Also because Dexter is a little picky(okay nothing little about it) she had me add banana to his first batch, so he would recognize that the beans were a food source. Sharks Are Color-Blind, Retina Study Suggests
Ten species tested had no color-sensing cells, while seven had only one type.
Sharks may be able to smell blood from miles away, but they probably don't know how red it is: New research suggests sharks are color-blind.
Sharks have successfully prowled the oceans for millions of years, in part because of an impressive suite of sensory systems, including well-developed eyes and a large area in the brain devoted to vision.
But over the past few decades conflicting data have sparked a debate about whether sharks can see colors. (Related: "Color-Blindness Cured by Gene Injection in Monkeys.")
In a new study, scientists looked at the retinas of 17 shark species caught off the coasts of eastern and western Australia, including tiger sharks and bull sharks.
Retinas use two main types of light-sensitive cells to allow animals to see: Rod cells help measure brightness, while various types of cone cells help distinguish colors.
A technique known as microspectrophotometry had previously shown that rays and chimaeras, both close relatives of sharks, have color vision. (Related pictures: "Weird New Ghostshark Found; Male Has Sex Organ on Head.")
Using the same method, Nathan Scott Hart at the University of Western Australia and colleagues scanned shark retinas for pigments linked with rod and cone cells.
Rod cells were the most common types of photoreceptor found in all 17 shark species, which means the predators should be able to see within a wide range of light levels.
But no cone cells were observed in 10 of the 17 species, while only one type of cone cell appeared to be present in the other 7. This suggests that these sharks cannot tell different colors apart.
"We can't say hands down if sharks are color-blind yet, as there are over 400 different shark species," said shark biologist Michelle McComb at Florida Atlantic University's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute.
"But these findings are excellent, and a surprise, and definitely should spur more work," said McComb, who did not take part in the new study.
Color-Blindness to Save Rare Sharks?
It makes sense that sharks might be color-blind, the study team noted. Many aquatic predators—such as whales, dolphins, and seals—also appear to be color-blind, which may be because color vision isn't much use in their mostly blue-green environments.
If the discovery holds true for more shark species, it could be used to help reduce the numbers of endangered sharks accidentally caught by fisheries, as well as prevent shark attacks on humans. (See "Eight Million Sharks Killed Accidentally off Africa Yearly.")
"Our study shows that contrast against the background, rather than color per se, may be more important for object detection by sharks," study co-author Hart said in a statement.
"This may help us to design longline fishing lures that are less attractive to sharks, as well as to design swimming attire and surf craft that have a lower visual contrast to sharks and therefore are less attractive to them."

New Hybrid Whale Discovered!
They may be polar opposites, but something is attracting two species of minke whales, producing at least one hybrid offspring, a new study says.
A cross between an Antarctic minke whale and a northern minke whale was recently discovered during a DNA analysis of whales caught by Norwegian hunters.
Normally the two whale species—both of which can reach 35 feet (11 meters) in length—undertake seasonal migrations that separate them by many miles of ocean.
Northern minkes head toward the North Pole in spring and ply waters up to the edge of Arctic ice during the summer. In autumn these whales head south, nearly as far as the Equator, to spend the winter. (See whale pictures.)
Antarctic whales follow a similar pattern, moving between Antarctic ice and warmer mid-latitudes with the seasons.
But because the two hemispheres' seasons are opposite, the minke species don't share near-equatorial waters at the same time. Thus, they were never thought to meet—until now.
Whale of a Shocker
Minkes have been hunted extensively since the 1930s, and the few nations that still practice whaling—including Norway, Greenland, and Japan—target them today.
Soon after Norwegians resumed commercial whale hunting in 1993—following a brief moratorium—the country established a DNA registry to analyze whale kills and help ensure that whale products come from legal sources.
Geneticist Kevin Glover was recently analyzing whale DNA when he came across a surprise—a whale hunted in the northeastern Atlantic in 2007 had the genetic blueprint of a hybrid, with an Antarctic minke mother.
Glover's colleague then told him an interesting story relayed by a whaling vessel's scientific observer nearly 15 years ago.
"He said there was a very strange-looking individual taken back in 1996—it didn't have the white patch on its pectoral flippers like the [northern minke whales do]," said Glover, of the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen, Norway. "I wonder if it could be the same sort."
So Glover analyzed the DNA of the 1996 whale captured in the North Atlantic, and found a shocker: It was a pure Antarctic whale. The sample had been overlooked because the DNA archive was in its infancy when the whale was captured.
This Antarctic whale in the Arctic provided further evidence that Antarctic minkes can migrate to the home waters of their northern relatives and—as the hybrid shows—even mate with them, according to the study, published December 22 in the journal PLoS ONE.
Drop in Food Driving Whale Migration?
Still, the genes leave a lot of unanswered questions—Is the hybrid whale a fluke, or the beginning of a trend? No one knows, but Glover said that his whale biologist colleague Nils Ă˜ien has an interesting theory.
Japanese studies showed that the numbers of Antarctic minke in the Southern Hemisphere appeared to drop significantly between the 1980s and 1990s. Other studies show that supplies of the krill—tiny marine crustaceans—that fuel the Antarctic food chain also dropped during this period.
"Japanese research has even shown that the fat layer on whales down there has decreased—not to the point of malnutrition, but suggesting a decreased access to food," Glover said.
"So we speculate that the amount of krill and available food has decreased, and maybe as a result the whales are starting to go scouting for food.
"It could be that these individuals are straying away from their territory in the search for food, and a few of them may have found their way to the Arctic Circle."

Let's Talk Travel.
Okay, I know alot of people think that birds are cage bound animals, and you can't take them anywhere...blah blah blah. Trust me, you meet a caged bird that is bored, has little interaction, and doesnt get to travel anywhere... you are going to meet a very angry, anti-social bird, that might be very well plotting your demise. Birds in just about any capacity (now I did not say ALL) are flock animals, and interact as such. There are some rogue species that will go off on their own... but that's a whole other blog!
Now when traveling with any bird... I recommend getting the essentials, starting with a Bird First Aid Kit.
1. Styptic Powder... you can get a couple viles, and I have one where ever we go!!
2. Hydrogen Peroxide
3. Gauze bandage
4. Towels, I like a couple of dish towels that are white (because you can see body fluids better on a white surface)
5. Location of your local Avian Veterinarian.
You may be lucky and never need to use your emergency kit, but hey, it's better to be safe than sorry.
Next is the travel cage. I like to use my macguyver instincts, and make things a little more inexpensive, and keep them practical. I went to PetsMart and purchased a dog travel crate, that folds down, and was very spacious for Dexter. I thought to myself, how can I make this work. Well I also purchased a few removable feed dishes, and some smaller perches, and toys. Bad-a-bing Bad-a-bang, we were off to the races.
I read online that it would be good to get dexter used to it, so I had a portable table that I placed the cage on, and he went into every room I was in. For the first couple weeks, I would only give him treats while he was on or in the cage... this is the best form of positive reinforcement. He began to love his cage. We then took him in the car, I was a little concerned, but he took to it like a fish to water. Now when transferring your little friend in and out of the car in colder conditions, PLEASE cover him up, and make sure the car is about the same temp as the house when he gets in. You don't want to give your buddy a scrorching case of pneumonia. The bottom tray I covered in a garbage bag (easily thrown away if it gets soiled) and covered with the New York Times.
I had some climbing rope capo's that I use to secure and lock the doors into place. I dont know about you, but Dexter LOVES his swing , so I actually took that with us, and put it in to the cage. Bingo... another security element added to his domain. I went to my local grocery store and saw some toys (cat toys) that they were selling in the upscale parrot store, and cost 400 times what they did at the market. So grabbed a couple of those, and the funny thing is he will only play with them in his travel cage, he wont even blink at them if I put them into his regular cage. Water, I take a bottle of "home" water with us if I know we are one going to be out of city water, or on another city water system. This can cause distress to small digestive systems. In the car if we are going to be on a longer car ride... I bring frozen grapes. They stay frozen a pretty long time, and they will provide H20 if they need it. Well, and let's just say, it's a hecka-of-a tasty treat! On top of the cage to offer another option for a perch, and stretching out his little feet, I attached a cotton rope perch so he would have something to sit on.
